DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
